Dr. Heller’s Philosphy
For treating ADHD/executive function issues, Dr. Carey Heller often blends traditional talk therapy with practical ADHD/executive function coaching. This provides clients with concrete tools to help them make improvements with time management and organizational skills. For children and teens, he often focuses on direct school items, such as keeping track of assignments, managing stress/feeling overwhelmed, and relevant study skills. With adults, Dr. Heller frequently helps them to be more efficient with work tasks, plan/organize better, and balance work and personal life obligations.
Furthermore, as a psychologist, he is able to help people process their feelings, increase motivation & self-esteem, and address other relevant issues. Paired with practical strategies, this can lead to significant improvements in task completion in addition to greater satisfaction and peace in life. Finally, Dr Heller provides psychotherapy, ADHD/executive function coaching (within the context of individual treatment), and formal assessment services. He also runs an executive functioning boot camp.

In addition to his work with the practice, Dr. Carey Heller has a faculty appointment as an assistant clinical professor of clinical psychology at The George Washington University, providing assessment supervision to graduate students. He also serves on the board of the Montgomery County chapter of Children and Adults with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (CHADD) as the chapter coordinator as well as on the board of Washington Independent Services For Educational Resources (WISER) as president. Furthermore, Dr. Heller is on the National CHADD Board as the chair of the Editorial Advisory Board (EAB) for CHADD’s Attention Magazine.
Dr. Heller’s Writing
Dr. Heller loves to write. He is a national topic expert contributor on ADHD for goodtherapy.org. Dr. Heller also has written several books, with more information under the “Resources” tab on the website. Furthermore, he frequently writes articles and has had ones published in a variety of publications including Washington Parent and Attention Magazine. Finally, Dr. Heller publishes a local blog on parenting for Montgomery Community Media.
Dr. Heller has been in private practice for over ten years. His training includes completing his pre-doctoral internship at Jewish Family Services in Richmond, Virginia, which is affiliated with the Central Virginia Consortium. He also completed an externship at the DC Superior Court’s Child Guidance Clinic. Dr. Heller has experience conducting psychotherapy and assessments with individuals across the lifespan in school, community mental health center, group practice, and forensic settings. Finally, he received his doctorate in clinical psychology from The George Washington University.
Dr. Heller’s Pastimes
Outside of work, Dr. Heller enjoys spending time with his family. He also loves sports. Dr. Heller enjoys following most professional sports, especially football, basketball, and baseball. In addition, he has a lot of fun coaching youth baseball and basketball teams. Furthermore, Dr. Heller likes photography.

Professional Background
Hope Heller has over 15 years of experience in the healthcare industry, with a specific focus in the Huntington’s Disease community. In 2009, Hope met her first patient with Huntington’s Disease, which lead to her becoming the social worker for the Huntington’s Disease Society of America (HDSA) DC Metro Chapter. Here, Hope spent over 6 years facilitating their support groups and providing the broader HD community with support and resources.
Building MedStar Georgetown HD CERC
In 2012, while working on the Neuro-ICU at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital, Hope Heller was recruited to help start and build MedStar Georgetown University Hospital Huntington’s Disease Care, Education, and Research Center (HD CERC), the first multidisciplinary Huntington’s Disease center in the DC Metro Area. Her work played an integral role in the HD CERC receiving and maintaining HDSA Center of Excellence designation. In addition to supporting patient families, Hope ran the multidisciplinary clinics, coordinated clinical trials, planned, and coordinated community education events. Hope was also the first line of contact for anyone seeking care or genetic testing through the HD CERC.
Hope Heller’s Passion
Hope continues to provide training to healthcare facilities, and consults for pharmaceutical companies on Huntington’s Disease outreach. She has served on the Huntington’s Study Group Member Education committee and Executive Coordinator Council. Over the years, Hope has been able to take advantage of her proximity to Capitol Hill, advocating for Huntington’s Disease and other rare diseases.
Hope strongly believes that everyone should have access to good healthcare and be provided education on navigating our healthcare and long-term care systems. Moreover, she believes that Advanced Directives are a gift we give to our loved ones. She is licensed in Maryland, the District of Columbia, and Virginia.

Professional Background
Shawna Bush has a wide variety of experiences in educational and related fields. Before graduate school, she worked as a preschool teacher and a Research Supervisor at Yale University on studies involving dogs, children, and families.
Education
Shawna attended the University of Connecticut and completed the Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental and Related Disabilities (LEND) Program at the University of Connecticut Health Center’s Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities (UCEDD). She continued to work at the UCEDD as she earned her Master’s degree and a sixth-year professional diploma in education. Shawna then completed her School Psychology internship in Loudoun County, VA, serving two elementary schools as she started her professional career.

In addition to her work with Heller Psychology Group, Shawna Bush works for Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS). She is passionate about utilizing a strength-based approach to help others succeed in their overall self-management skills to achieve their goals.
